What a Mom at the Age of 45 Stops Buying
What I will stop buying when it comes to fashion and style
As we age, our fashion choices naturally evolve. By the time we hit 45, we often have a clearer sense of who we are, what we like, and what truly suits us. For many women, this shift brings a newfound confidence and a desire to refine their wardrobe, focusing on quality, comfort, and timeless style rather than trends that may no longer feel relevant.
Let me share with you what this 45-year-old mom of 3 might stop buying when it comes to fashion and style and why.
TRENDY FAST FASHION
When I was younger, it’s easy for me to get swept up in the excitement of fast fashion, you know, the usual trendy pieces that are hot today but out of style tomorrow? When I reached my 40s I started to lose interest in this kind of fashion and now that I am 45, I noticed that I start prioritizing quality over quantity, I am recognizing the value in investing in pieces that last. Fast fashion often sacrifices quality for speed, leading to items that wear out quickly or simply don’t age well.
I found myself wanting to Invest in timeless, high-quality pieces that can be mixed and matched and I started to look for items that are made from durable fabrics like wool, silk, or cotton, and choose classic cuts that never go out of style.
SKY-HIGH HEELS
There was a time when a pair of towering heels might have been the go-to for a night, who can relate? But it was really for a short period of time for me. More than ever, it is at this age that I am firmer in choosing comfort without sacrificing style. I started to see that sky-high heels can be uncomfortable, impractical, and even detrimental to foot health. For me, at this stage in life, comfort and functionality become just as important as appearance, do you agree?
What I would go for? I now prefer mid-height heels, block heels, or stylish flats that offer support and ease without compromising on style. More often than not I even wear sneakers. Brands that focus on ergonomic design can provide fashionable options that are also kind to your feet.
CHEAP COSTUME JEWELRY
People who know me so well can attest that I love wearing jewelries, especially bracelets. Costume jewelry can be fun, but over time, we outgrow the appeal of cheap, mass-produced accessories. Tarnishing, breakage, and the disposable nature of these items is frustrating. Now that I am older, my focus shifts towards curating a collection of jewelry that is meaningful, durable, and reflective of my personal style.
At 45, I now prefer to Invest in a few key pieces of fine jewelry that can be worn every day and passed down as heirlooms, especially that I have 2 daughters. I would like to consider timeless designs in gold, silver, or platinum, and look for pieces that have personal significance or that add a touch of elegance to any outfit that I am wearing.
OVERLY TRENDY FITS
Trendy prints, such as animal prints or neon colors, can be fun to experiment with, but will you agree with me if I say that they often have a short shelf life in the fashion world. Lately, I am leaning towards patterns that are more subtle and versatile, I feel that overly trendy prints can feel dated quickly and may not align with a more refined, classic wardrobe.
What do I go for? I opt for timeless patterns like stripes, polka dots, or florals in neutral or muted tones. These prints are more versatile and can easily be incorporated into both casual and formal outfits.
OVERLY FITTING CLOTHES
At 45, the days of tolerating clothes that don’t fit properly are behind me. Whether it’s jeans that dig in or tops that gape, ill-fitting clothes are no longer worth the discomfort or the hit to my self- confidence. At this time, I have accepted the size of my body and I know my body better than ever. I now understand the importance of wearing clothes that flatter my figure.
I will focus on finding clothes that are tailored to my body shape. Whether it’s investing in custom alterations or seeking out brands that cater to my body type, because, I strongly believe that well-fitted clothes can make a world of difference in how you look and feel. Agreed?
ANYTHING THAT SACRIFICES COMFORT FOR STYLE
Fashionable items that require too much fuss, whether it’s a dress that rides up, a jacket that restricts movement, or shoes that pinch. They started to lose their appeal by to me when I turned 40s. Comfort becomes my key priority, but that doesn’t mean I am giving up on style.
Instead, I look for pieces that combine comfort with style. Soft fabrics, stretchy materials, and designs that move with you can help you feel and look your best. Athleisure, elevated casual wear, and well-made basics are great staples.
OVERLY YOUTHFUL STYLES
At 45, I want to believe that I’ve develop a sense of style that feels authentic to me, often stepping away from overly youthful trends that no longer resonate. In the Philippines, old people will tell you, “para kang nagmumurang kamias.” It pertains to an older person dressing up in a way that makes them 'look younger', only that the outfit doesn't work at all. For me, if you are aiming to embrace a more mature, confident look, clothes that are too tight, too short, or too revealing might feel out of place.
Now that I’ve reached this age, I’d embrace age-appropriate styles that still reflect my personality. Midi dresses, well-tailored pants, and tops with interesting details can be just as stylish and far more comfortable. It's about finding the balance between youthful energy and timeless elegance.
BULK PURCHASES OF BASICS
In the past, it might have seemed practical to stock up on cheap basics like t-shirts, leggings, or tank tops. My kids can attest how guilty I am for doing this! However, at 45, my focus shifts from quantity to quality. Cheap basics may lose their shape, fade, or pill quickly, leading to disappointment and waste.
Again, I would prefer to Invest in high-quality basics that last longer and look better with wear. A well-made white t-shirt, for example, can be a versatile wardrobe hero when it’s made from quality materials and constructed to last.
CLOTHING THAY DOESN’T ALIGN WITH MY VALUES
Will you agree with me, when I say some women at 45 are more conscious of the ethical and environmental impacts of their purchasing decisions, because I personally do. As much as I can, I do away with fast fashion, synthetic fabrics, and brands with poor labor practices.
I prefer to support sustainable fashion brands that prioritize ethical practices, use eco-friendly materials, and offer transparency in their production processes. I believe that shopping mindfully not only benefits you but also the planet.
I don’t know if it was just me or people who reach midlife feel the same, but for me turning 45 brought a renewed focus with me, my decisions are focus on what truly matters in life— and yes, including my wardrobe! By prioritizing quality, comfort, and timeless style over fleeting trends and fast fashion, I can create a wardrobe that reflects my confidence, maturity, and individuality.
It could be such a simple thing for some, but for me, I want to take this opportunity of reaching 45 to refocus some aspects of my life and that includes embracing this stage of life by curating a closet full of pieces that make me feel I am at my best, every single day.
