From Nigeria to Canada: A Journey of Growth, Resilience & Entrepreneurship

When Olwaseyi James, fondly called Shay by people close to her, left Nigeria for Canada in 2015, she brought along not just her dreams but also an adventurous spirit and an openness to life’s challenges. Her immigrant story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and the blossoming of a passion that turned into a thriving business.

The Journey to a New Beginning

Shay’s journey to Canada began as an international student. While she was excited to explore new horizons, the transition came with its share of challenges. “I faced culture shock and a language barrier,” she recalls. “Although Nigeria is an English-speaking country, people often struggled to understand my accent.” Fortunately, living in a school hostel surrounded by other international students helped her adapt. “Being around familiar faces made the transition smoother.”

 Discovering Freedom and New Perspectives

Moving to Canada gave Shay more than an education; it gave her freedom and a new perspective on life. “Back home, my parents were very protective. Coming to Canada allowed me to explore and appreciate their sacrifices in raising me.” This newfound independence became a catalyst for her personal and professional growth.

Baking: From Hobby to Business

Shay’s love for baking traces back to her family, where cakes were always part of special occasions. Her journey into entrepreneurship began with a simple dream and a lot of self-doubt. “One of the biggest challenges was building the confidence to start my business,” she says. Despite early rejections, Shay persisted. “A local baker offered guidance, and that was a turning point for me.” This paved the way to her very own OJS Bakery.

OJS Bakery is now known for its cakes that strike the perfect balance—not overly sweet but rich in flavor. “I don’t have a strong sweet tooth, so it’s important that my cakes taste great without being overwhelming. Many of my customers appreciate this unique approach.”

Navigating Challenges as an Immigrant Entrepreneur

Starting a business as an immigrant wasn’t easy. Beyond self-doubt, Shay had to navigate the complexities of Canadian business laws and regulations. But with the support of her family, friends, and a persistent mentor, she overcame these hurdles. “My family has been my biggest support system, always encouraging and showing up for me.”

There were moments when Shay felt like giving up, but her passion and the reminder of her dreams kept her going. “One of my earliest dreams was to start a bakery. Seeing that dream come true, despite the obstacles, is mind-blowing.”

Growth and Future Plans

Since its inception, OJS Bakery has grown steadily. Shay is excited about expanding her reach through third-party platforms, making her cakes accessible to a wider audience. While she celebrates her accomplishments, Shay is clear that this is just the beginning.

Pride and Advice for Fellow Immigrants

Looking back, Shay is most proud of her resilience. “I’m proud of the obstacles I’ve overcome and how far I’ve come as a business owner. I didn’t just dream—I acted.”

Her advice to other immigrants aspiring to start their own businesses in Canada is simple yet profound: “Start. You’ll never know everything beforehand, and that’s okay. Experience is the best teacher. Network, ask questions, and do your research. Most importantly, let your passion drive you through tough times.”

Shay’s story is a testament to the power of persistence, community, and self-belief. From a shy international student to the proud owner of OJS Bakery, Shay has poured her passion into creating delicious baked goods that reflect her unique touch.
