A Nostalgic Farewell to a Family Favorite

About a year after we  arrived in Winnipeg, one of the most comforting discoveries we made was Sushi Delight. Nestled in a quiet corner near where we used to live, this authentic, Japanese-owned gem became our go-to place for delicious meals and peaceful moments. I can’t even count the number of times our family dined there—back when it was practically a 10-minute walk from where we live. The cozy ambiance, the spotless interior, and the consistently excellent food made it feel like a second home to me and even to my three kids.

As time passed and we moved to a new neighborhood, our visits to Sushi Delight became less frequent. Exploring new Japanese restaurants was exciting, there were also those places that served great tasting Japanese food but none of them captured the same warm, homely vibe. Recently, a reminder from the app Swarm shocked me:, it was in 2021 when we last visited Sushi Delight!

This memory resurfaced just in time for a bittersweet news that we just learned when we passed by Sushi Delight.  Our favourite Japanese restaurant is up for sale! The original owners, who have been at the heart of this restaurant’s charm, are retiring. When I told my three kids about it, their reaction was instant and heartfelt, “That was our childhood right there.” They are very  clear on what we had to do - they made plans to visit Sushi Delight one more time.

Walking into the restaurant felt like stepping back in time. The familiar clean and cozy space instantly brought a smile to my face. As we devoured a table full of our favorites—Miso soup, sashimi, sushi rolls, and my forever go-to, chicken yakisoba—it felt as though no time had passed. The taste was still the same from the first time we visited this place, just as great as I remembered. The sashimi was fresh, the yakisoba was as flavorful as ever, and every bite seemed to unlock a flood of memories.

I couldn’t help but reminisce with my kids about all the special moments we’d celebrated in this restaurant. The time we marked a job promotion with a feast of sushi. A birthday celebration where the laughter was as abundant as the food. The weekend my parents first arrived in Winnipeg, and we introduced them to Japanese cuisine. Or the quiet Sunday afternoons after church when we gathered here to share a meal and stories.

Sushi Delight wasn’t just a restaurant—it was a witness to so many of our family milestones.

Now, as the owners prepare to move on to the next chapter of their lives, I can only encourage you to visit Sushi Delight while it’s still there. Whether you’re new to the area or a long-time fan, this little slice of Japan is worth experiencing. And who knows? You might just create some special memories of your own.

Let’s give Sushi Delight the farewell it truly deserves.
