5 Things That I Like About Canada

I was thinking of writing  about my immigration story until I had a chance to chat with Tatiana Nedelko from English Online, Inc. and I told her about it, she then thought that maybe as an immigrant I should talk about the things that I like about Canada.

Actually,  in 2009, I already wrote about the Things That I Love in Canada, when I wrote this article, it was just 3 months since my family and I arrived in Canada.  I just based what I wrote in that post to what I’ve seen and heard from the people that I met and encountered.  It’s been almost 7 years since we came to Canada,  a lot of things have changed and my family and I had our own share of our ups and downs already.  Sometimes, I still can’t believe that I am already living in Canada and that I’m already a Canadian citizen,  when I was younger, I did not even imagine that I will migrate to another country, but here I am now!

It’s been almost 7 years… I’ve come to know more about the way of life in Canada (in Winnipeg) and we have somehow adjusted. If you will ask me now, “What are the 5 things that I like about Canada?” this is what I am going to tell you:

  1. Canada is BIG – Next to Russia, Canada is the second largest country in the world.  Coming from a small country with a big population, the big space in this country is definitely one of the things that I appreciate the most. It feels that there’s enough space for everyone and it you are living in a place that is not congested it feels quite and peaceful.
  2. Health Care System – Not everyone will agree with me on this.  I am very much aware of some of the loopholes about the system and I am also guilty complaining of the odd wait times whenever you go to a hospital’s ER, but hey, if you are a citizen or a permanent resident of Canada and you get ill and you require medical treatment, you do not have to worry about the financial burden.
  3. Generous maternity/parental leave –  Depending on the length of your employment and the number of hours that you have worked in the preceding year, new moms in Canada can take between 17 and 52 weeks of leave from their jobs.  On top of the maternity leave,  either parent after the child is born or adopted can can take 35 weeks of parental leave, parents can share the leave however they choose.  Maternity and parental is administered by provincial employment insurance plans, if eligible, the parent is paid at 55% of his/her average weekly insurable wage, up to a maximum of $485 per week. An employer is required to accept the employee back into his/her, or the equivalent, at the end of the maternity/parental leave at the same rate of pay with the same employment benefits.
  4. Public Facilities – In the province that I am in and in other provinces that I have been, I noticed the abundance of parks, libraries and recreational amenities.  These facilities are well-kept and maintained, not everyone here may appreciate this but compared to other countries, Canadians are fortunate to enjoy free or subsidized amenities like these.
  5. Clean Environment – Environmental stewardship is important to Canadians. The government of Canada is working hard to ensure that Canadians enjoy a clean environment, thus, life expectancy in Canada 76.5 years.

I also asked other people the same question, and watch this 4-minute video of what they have to say…

Though, there are times that I will still wish to be in the Philippines, I can still say that I do no regret moving to Canada. I know a lot of people who are waiting in anticipation to come to Canada, maybe because just like me and other immigrants, they believe that Canada is for them and the “greener pasture” here will turn their ideal quality of life to reality.

Momsiecle

Momsiecle is short for Momsie's Circle. I started my first blog on a free blogging platform in 2006 as a just for fun blog. When my family and I moved to Winnipeg in 2009, I started to write about my challenges and discoveries about living in Canada as an immigrant. In 2012, I decided to make momsiecle.com a place to come for aspiring Canadian immigrants and for people who are embracing life in the “new world” that they are in.

  1. I actually have a looong list of things i like and love about Canada.😊 5 of which are healthcare system, clean environment, job opportunities, travel opportunities and peaceful way of life.

  2. I like the fact that there are more opportunities to build a successful career here in Canada. I feel very lucky to have been welcomed here as an immigrant and have access to free healthcare, affordable education, job opportunities, social networking and many more.

Quality education is free! As a mom of 2 boys, i only wish for my kids to have the best education. Here, they are receiving it for free! Let’s admit it, that in other countries, the quality of education depends on how much money you are willing to shed out.

  4. There are so many things I like about Canada. First of all, I love how friendly and respectful mostly everyone here. They always say thank you or the most common one, they mostly say, “sorry” even though they don’t need to be sorry at all. But hey, that’s why they call the province I lived in, “Friendly Manitoba.” Aside from that, our surroundings are kept clean and neat which is good for the environment. Also, there are so many beautiful parks we can go to and enjoy the scenery of colorful flowers, green grass, tall trees, mountains, and sometimes we come across some animals such as deer, rabbits, moose, and bears in the wilderness. Yes, we do have zoos for those animals that are kept safe and taken cared of. I also agree that we are very fortunate and should be thankful for having free health care. Don’t forget that we have lots of open job opportunities for different enthnicity. Lastly, despite the the cold weather during winter, I do enjoy being outside seeing all the snow! We can do a lot of fun activities here in Canada during the winter such as skating, sledding, snow boarding and skiing. I could go on and on with the reason why I love Canada but all I can say is that I love it here and I couldn’t say anything less. 🙂

  5. I like canada, it gives you opportunity to work even if you are old,, and also all canadian i met were all polite

  6. The best thing I love about Canada is Option. This country offers good government benefits, healthy environment and lots of work opportunities. But sometimes it is overwhelming. Remember that it is not about work and bills at all times. So its up to us if we will choose to abuse the benefits, or to live fancy but complicated life or to live a simple debt free life. (Note: fancy and simple life depends on an individual definition). My option is to live a simple debt free life. Less headache, less hassle etc etc and that’s what I love the most living in the land of the free.

  7. There are alot of things that you will like about Canada, as for me, I particularly like the fair treatment to everyone, good example of this is whenever you look for a job, everyone, regardless of your race, color, age, sexual preference or if you have disability, you will be treated fairly. I also admire how the government supports Canadians, especially the low-income families, the lower your income, the more benefits that the government will provide you. Next is the quality of life – yes there are rich and middle class families here but everyone can buy things that rich people can have.

  8. The strong sense of multiculturalism in Canada is on the top of my list, next is education, third one is love for community, work-life balance and lastly is the clean environment.

  9. Funny it may seem but I love the 4-season weather in Canada and just like one of the persons who is in the video, I love that Canada is not congested and there are a lot of good places to go.

  10. Hi! Your blogs are very refreshing! I mean, we are thinking about migrating to Canada and from what I’ve read from your writings, I will, we will love it there! 😀 Please keep it up! God bless you and your family.
